Former German great Boris Becker has said that he wants Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold winner Alexander Zverev “to become the most successful German player of all time. Although he also feels that he (Alexander Zverev) must win “one or two Grand Slams” to get there.

24-year-old Zverev enjoyed a very good season this year as he won Olympic gold at the rescheduled 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and won the ATP Finals and was also the only male player to win multiple Masters titles in Cincinnati and Madrid.

Six-time Grand Slam champion Becker told the podcast of Eurosport Germany, “Das Gelbe vom Ball”, that he believes Zverev could become the next World number one as soon as “next year. “The next big goal for Sascha Zverev has to be the number one [position]. He can make it next year in my eyes. But that’s only possible if he wins one or two Grand Slam tournaments”, says Boris Becker.

The three times Wimbledon winner further added that Zverev’s Olympics Gold was certainly unique. “You saw it this year: the clear number one was Djokovic with three Grand Slam wins, the clear number two was Medvedev with one Grand Slam win and the clear number three was Sascha. Certainly, an ATP Finals title is an absolute highlight in one’s career – he has won that twice – and victory at the Olympics was certainly unique, but the next big triumph has to be a victory at a Grand Slam tournament. Then you get closer to your dream”, further quotes Becker.

Alexander Zverev has been in tremendous form throughout the year and has wrapped the season perfectly with a win in ATP Finals title as he beat US Open winner Daniil Medvedev in the final. He managed to reach the ATP Finals title by beating World no.1 Novak Djokovic.

Alexander Zverev would certainly like to take his current form to the next season which will commence with the start of Australian Open on 17th January 2022. Zverev is among the favourites to win the first grand slam of 2022.
