The 2021 edition of the Miami Open is currently in its second week and we have already enjoyed a good first week of play. Even though many top-ranked players are absent, including Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and eight-time winner, Serena Williams, the players on ground have managed to make it very interesting and highly competitive, making it an event worth following.

On Monday, British Cameron Norrie’s reign in the tournament came to an end after he suffered defeat in the hands of Taylor Fritz in a game of three rounds – 6-4 3-6 6-1. Norrie made up for his poor performance in the first round by winning the second. But he was overpowered by the American in the third round, who broke his serve twice.

Andrey Rublev had no problems beating Marton Fucsovics, claiming victory in just two rounds. On Sunday, world number 3, Daniil Medvedev overcame leg cramps to defeat Alexei Popyrin 7-6 (7-3) 6-7 (7-9) 6-4. He finished the game barely walking and described it as one of the “sweetest victories” of his career. Other players who have made it to the round of 16 include Marin Cilic and Frances Tiafoe.

On the women’s side, it has been just as interesting. World number 1, Ashleigh Barty proved herself against Belarusian Victoria Azarenka. Barty came from losing the second round after scoring just one to win the third round with an almost equal margin, ending the game 6-1 1-6 6-2. She would now advance to the quarterfinal round. Petra Kvitova could not finish off the good thing she started as she lost to Elina Svitolina 6-2 5-7 5-7.

7th seed Aryna Sabalenka produced a wonderful play in little time to earn her spot in the quarterfinal after beating Marketa Vondrousova 6-1 6-2. Other players on the women’s side would play on Tuesday to decide who makes it through to the round of 16.
