Mark Davis continued his good recent record against John Higgins by thrashing the reigning champion 5-1 in their last-16 encounter at the Shanghai Masters.

The in-form Englishman defeated Higgins 6-0 on his way to defending his Six-red World Championship crown a fortnight ago, while he also knocked the Scot out of last season’s World and UK Championships.

Davis was quickly in the ascendancy in China on Thursday as he went ahead thanks to a break of 76 before moving into a 3-0 lead.

Four-time champion Higgins responded to give himself a glimmer of hope by winning the fourth frame, but that was dashed when Davis hit a 52 to win the fifth and then cleared the colours in the sixth frame to claim victory.

The world number 17 now goes forward to a quarter-final against Xiao Guodong on Friday.

Higgins follows the likes of Stuart Bingham, Mark Allen, Judd Trump and Stephen Maguire who are the other big-name players to crash out of the Shanghai Masters.
