Marco Fu pulled off a shock to defeat home favourite Neil Robertson 9-6 in the final of the Australian Goldfields Open.

Robertson was the hot favourite to go on and win the tournament after defeating Mark Selby in the semi-final, but it was Fu, who took care of Robert Milkins in the last four, that took the win.

Fu got off to the perfect start when taking the opening frame thanks to a break of 98, but Robertson hit back to take the next two frames with breaks of 78 and 92 respectively.

However Fu recovered to win the next three frames to surge ahead and, despite threatening a late fight-back, Robertson could not catch him.

Fu had had built up a three-frame lead with another break of 70 in frame 11 but Robertson fought back and got within a frame at 7-6.

The 35-year-old Fu kept his nerve though to win the final two frames and record his second career ranking event title ? and he was understandably delighted to have come through despite not being at his best.

“I had a good season last year and played some good snooker, but it was frustrating not to win a title,” said Fu.

“Neil and I played the best snooker throughout the week, although today it didn’t really happen for us. We both got a bit tired towards the end, and twitchy here and there.”
