Trainer Willie Mullins has confirmed that he would love a crack at the Melbourne Cup with Clondaw Warrior in the future.

The nine-year-old was in action on Saturday at Arlington in the United States and he was just beaten on the turf in the American St Leger.

Da Big Hoss grabbed the race win under jockey Florent Geroux but Clondaw Warrior proved his class just weeks after winning the Galway Hurdle against a competitive field.

The brown gelding won the contest in Ireland under jockey Ruby Walsh at the end of July and Mullins was impressed with his performance this weekend.

After seeing him run, Mullins is now considering a trip Down Under after he just missed out on the win last year with Max Dynamite. When asked if Clondaw Warrior would race in Australia, Mullins told www.twinspires.com: “I’m hoping that.

“He looked fantastic today even with all his travels this year. He jumped very slowly (at the start) but with another 5/16ths to get up to two miles, he looked like he wanted every bit of it there.

“When he’s closing on the Belmont Gold Cup winner (Da Big Hoss) that has to mean he’s good enough to go Melbourne.

“He might have one more run (in England or Ireland). We’ll see. He’ll have to improve a little in the weights to get into the race, but we’d love to go if we can.”
