Roger Varian has signalled his desire to target both York’s Juddmonte International and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe with Postponed.

The five-year-old has developed into one of Britain’s leading middle distance performers, with a string of five successive wins on his CV.

A respiratory infection denied him the opportunity to bid for back-to-back successes in the King George and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot last month, but Varian has confirmed he is on course to head for York to run in the Juddmonte on August 17.

Adding a top level prize over the ten-furlong distance on the Knavesmire is, says the trainer, a stated ambition for the son of Dubawi.

“Postponed wasn’t 100 per-cent before the King George, so he didn’t run,” Varian said. “I’m happy with him now and he’s on course to run at York.

“Winning a Group 1 over a mile-and-a-quarter with him is a big objective. If he could win one it would certainly add to his CV.”

Varian decided against entering Postponed for British Champions Day at Ascot in October and instead will turn his attention to Chantilly and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe on Sunday October 2 as a potential follow-up to York.

America is also a potential destination for a horse that displayed his ability to travel well with victories in France and Dubai over the last 12 months. “He’s more likely to contest the Arc,” Varian added.

“There are lots of ifs and buts about possible races after that, but he could go to the Breeders’ Cup.” Postponed is a 4.00 chance to win the Juddmonte International at York.
