Rod Pampling has maintained his position at the top of the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open leaderboard after carding a three-under-par 68 on day two.
The Australian had set a course record score of 60 on the opening day, but he struggled to maintain those high standards during the start of his second round, picking up bogies at two of his opening five holes.
The 47-year-old recovered from that slow start, however, playing his last 13 holes in five-under, and he now holds a one-shot lead over the rest of the field on 14-under-par.
The world number 451 conceded after his round that his score could have been even better, but he was pleased with the way he bounced back from his slow start.
“Just two silly mistakes that I made,” Pampling said. “I knew things were still good. I didn’t panic.
I made a good one on I think it was our sixth hole for birdie and then made a great up-and-down on 16. That just kind of righted the ship, and then after that I was fine, and we played nice after that.”
American Brooks Koepka is Pampling’s nearest rival, as he is just one-shot back on 13-under, after following up an opening round of 62 with a 67 on Friday.
Koepka’s compatriot Aaron Wise is a further shot off the pace, and he still has four holes of his second round to play, as bad light brought proceedings to an end early at TPC at Summerlin.
Pampling remains the man to beat and he is available at 10.00 to claim his first PGA Tour title since his success at the Bay Hill Invitational in March 2006.
