Tiger Woods believes it is not out of the question that he can rediscover his best form and claim the Open Championship at St Andrews.
The former world No.1 arrived in Scotland at the weekend to begin his preparations for the third major of the year in good spirits after a strong showing at the Greenbrier Classic earlier this month.
The 39-year-old shot his best round of the year, a four-under 66, before ending up in a tie for 32nd in West Virginia.
In the context of his 2015, his performance at the Greenbrier Classic was considered a success by Woods, who missed the cut at the US Open and shot the worst round of his career, an 85, earlier this year.
The 14-time major winner has once again struggled with back issues this year, forcing him to alter his swing as a result, and his struggles to adapt have seen him slip to 241 in the world rankings.
Despite the on-going issues with his game, Woods claims he feels good about his chances of clinching a 15th major title at the Open this week.
Asked by the BBC whether he could claim a fourth Claret Jug this weekend, Woods replied: “Absolutely. I wouldn’t say I’ve found the solution – it’s a process, an evolution, making subtle shifts, fine tuning and getting the overall pattern different, and that takes time.
“I’m starting to feel like I’m getting more consistent – the last round at Greenbrier was probably the best I’ve hit in a couple of years.
“I know I’m heading in the right direction. It’s going take a tremendous amount of work and a lot of patience but I’ll get there eventually.”
Woods, who is 31.00 to win the Open, went on to talk about his love for St Andrews, the venue for this week’s major, having enjoyed previous success at the historic Scottish course.
“It’s my favourite golf course in the world,” he added.”I love coming back here and seeing it and remembering all the shots and remembering all the good times I’ve had here.”
