World number two Dustin Johnson admits he is delighted with his game after claiming a share of the lead after the first round of the Tour Championship on Thursday.

Johnson, 3.30 to win the tournament, gave himself a great chance of winning the FedExCup’s £7.7million prize after he hit a round of 66 to claim a share of the lead.

His four-under round was matched by fellow American Kevin Chappell and Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama, but Johnson looks in a good position to finish the year on a high.

He has already won three tournaments this year, including the US Open as well as last week’s BMW Championship.

The 32-year-old could have claimed the outright lead but a bogey on the 13th unsettled him before he recovered and picked the shot back up on the 18th.

Speaking after his round, Johnson admitted his game is in a good place at the minute. He told the PGA Tour: “I felt like I was really relaxed out there today.

I’ve got a lot of confidence in the game right now. So I’m looking forward to this week and seeing how good I can play.”

Kevin Kisner, Si Woo Kim and Jason Day all sit one shot behind the leading trio on three-under while Rory McIlroy and Paul Casey are also in contention.

The European duo are tied on two-under alongside Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas after rounds of 68.
