Mercedes’ head of motorsport Toto Wolff believes it is only a matter of time before reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton signs a new contract with the team.

British ace Hamilton has emerged as the dominant force in Formula 1 over recent seasons, winning the World Championship title in three of the last four years.

The 33-year-old is expected to be the man to beat once again during the upcoming campaign although 2018 could also be his last with Mercedes as he is out of contract at the end of the season.

Despite the relative uncertainty surrounding Hamilton’s future, Wolff remains confident the four-time world champion will sign a new deal sooner rather than later.

“Lewis has become such an important pillar within the team that it is a no-brainer that we continue with each other,” said Wolff.

“The discussions are ongoing in a very positive mindset and it’s just a matter of time when we seal it and put a signature to the document.”

Hamilton himself has previously suggested it is only a matter of time before he inks a new contract and Wolff believes there is an air of positivity surrounding Mercedes ahead of the new season.

“We’ve had a good winter, I would say, no real drama – but there is always stress at this time of year,” the 46-year-old added.

The 2018 season starts with the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne on March 25 and Hamilton is priced at 2.10 to go on and win a fifth world title.
