McLaren driver Sergio Perez insists team will not be able to compete with Formula One front runners until serious improvements are made on MP4-28.
Perez joined the Woking-based outfit in the close-season after Lewis Hamilton decided to jump ship and make the move over to Mercedes.
The Mexican has struggled to impose himself during the opening seven races of the campaign, picking up just 12 points and sitting in 13th in the Drivers’ Championship.
The 23-year-old and his team-mate, Jenson Button, have both failed to pick up a podium finish this season as they prepare for the British Grand Prix.
The former Sauber man revealed that a lot of work is required if they are to make any kind of progress and has called for wholesale modifications to be made to the vehicle.
Perez said: “I think we are very far from [winning].
“We have to do big updates, big improvements.
“At the moment we are one second per lap slower [than the pace setters], so we are not in the position that we want. You don’t win races by being one second off the pace.”
