McLaren’s Jenson Button believes the team must keep their cool for the remainder of the season despite their 2013 woes.

Instead of challenging for the podium and race wins, the Woking-based team have found themselves battling towards the middle of the field after seven races of the season. McLaren are down in sixth place in the Constructors’ standings with just 37 points.

Team principal Martin Whitmarsh has been criticised for his role this year and rumours suggest some members of staff may be replaced as McLaren look to rescue their season.

However, Button is adamant that the team just need to keep calm and keep pushing for the remainder of the season.

“I think for the drivers, or any of the management, to come out and say: ‘Right, it’s this guy’s fault, let’s fire him’ is the wrong attitude,” he said.

“You are going to scare people, and maybe go in the wrong direction. It’s not one person’s problem. No one within the team deserves to get fired over what has happened this year. I think we have made a mistake as a team.

“I am sure you have heard it all before, but there isn’t anything else to say on the matter. If we learn from this mistake, you will see a much stronger McLaren next season.”
