Yannick Bolasie admits Everton need to become more consistent against the Premier League’s smaller teams if they are to qualify for Europe.
The Toffees, who are 12.00 to finish in the top four, made an excellent start to the campaign but have dropped off in recent weeks and are currently on a run of five games without a win in all competitions following Saturday’s defeat at Burnley.
Fortunately for them, the inconsistency of those below means they remain in sixth, the same position boss Ronald Koeman guided Southampton to last season.
However, there is arguably more talent in the Everton squad but their inability to string results together in recent years has been a cause of continued frustration for everyone at the club.
Bolasie, who scored his side’s goal in the 2-1 defeat at Turf Moor, admits they need to improve against the smaller teams if they are to fulfil their ambition of qualifying for Europe.
The winger is quoted as saying by the Liverpool Echo: “Against the top teams we’ll do well against them and if we can nick points off them and then beat teams like Burnley, near the bottom, then you’ll look at the end of the season and you’ll be in sixth position.
“Like what Southampton did last season and you also build your own confidence doing that.” Next up is the visit of West Ham on Sunday, a team who themselves have struggled to find any rhythm this season.
The 27-year-old admits his side’s recent run has surprised the squad but says they are determined to put things right, starting against the Hammers.
He added: “It is only when I came in after the game that I realised it was five games (in all competitions) without a win so we go into Sunday’s game with West Ham trying to rectify that.”
Everton are 1.75 to win on Sunday, with the draw 3.80 and the Hammers 4.50.
