Captain Wayne Rooney insists Manchester United have the quality in their squad to make a serious challenge for the Premier League title this season.
United have struggled to get near the top flight crown for the past three seasons whilst European glory has also been a thing of the past in current times.
Former Chelsea and Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho was brought in to succeed Louis van Gaal this summer and optimism levels were soaring in preparation for the new campaign.
Big signings were made in the last transfer window with Paul Pogba, Eric Bailly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan all arriving at Old Trafford.
However, the Red Devils have been less than inspiring under the Portuguese tactician so far and Monday’s 0-0 draw away at Liverpool highlighted the lack of attacking threat.
United are currently sitting seventh in the Premier League, five points behind table-toppers Manchester City, and the gap to their fierce rivals is already looking like a sizeable one.
But, despite the shaky start, Rooney, who has been dropped from the starting line-up recently, is optimistic a title challenge can be made this term.
“I think we’ve got a great squad,” the skipper said. “I said before the season we’d be challenging – we’ve still got that belief, even stronger after working with this manager and the players over the last few months.
“I think we’ve got a fantastic squad, who are ready and capable of challenging.” United, who are 13.00 to win the league this season, return to action on Sunday when they travel to Chelsea, who are on a two-game winning run.
Antonio Conte’s men are 2.15 favourites to clinch all three points, a draw is priced at 3.25 whilst the visitors are the 3.60 outsiders.
