Skipper Wayne Rooney feels too much is being made of his role in the England team and insists people are using it to make headlines.

The Manchester United man helped Sam Allardyce get his tenure as England manager off to a winning start as the Three Lions defeated Slovakia via Adam Lallana’s last-minute goal.

Rooney played in a deeper role with Harry Kane often appearing isolated up front.

Having collected his 116th cap as a senior international, Rooney suggested people were reading too much into where he pops up on the field of play.

According to Rooney, winning the game was the only thing mattered and Lallana’s late strike justified his place in the team.

“Too much is getting made about it,” he told Sky Sports. “Listen, I’m playing on the pitch for England.

I’m captain of the team and I feel I can do a very good job in the role I played tonight. “I feel too much is getting made.

It’s headlines for a lot of people, but of course it’s about the team and about us winning. I played in that role and helped us win the game.”

The three points ensured England, who won all 10 qualifying games en route to Euro 2016, had safely negotiated potentially the toughest away trip of their World Cup 2018 path.

Allardyce meanwhile conceded he would like to see Rooney involved higher up the field but he said he won’t tell a player of Rooney’s credentials where he can and cannot run.

“I can’t tell him where to run because he’s been one of the best his whole career at finding good space and promoting good passing forward and creating chances,” Allardyce said.

“Yes, we want to get him in goalscoring positions a bit more but today it doesn’t matter because we’ve won 1-0.” England are 1.18 to win Group F while Scotland are 9.00.
