Bayern Munich’s players have been told to pull together as a squad or consider leaving the club before the transfer window closes by boss Pep Guardiola.
That is the view expressed by central defender Jerome Boateng, while club captain Philipp Lahm says big-name stars must be prepared to sit on the bench when required.
Bayern begin the quest for an historic fourth successive Bundesliga crown when they face Hamburg on Friday night and Boateng says Guardiola has made things clear to his squad this summer.
“The coach has said it several times: should someone not accept the situation, he’s at the wrong club and can leave,” Boateng said in kicker. “It does not matter who it is.
“We work as a team and have many world-class players in the squad, but we all have to pull together.”
World Cup winner Bastian Schweinsteiger departed the club this summer but Guardiola has recruited Douglas Costa, Joshua Kimmich, Arturo Vidal and Pierre-Emerick Hojbjerg already and Lahm is urging everyone involved to accept the reality of being part of a large and talented squad.
“The coach can only field 11 players,” Lahm said. “The coach has also said that all of us have to produce performances out on the pitch. Things can go one way or the other, where a superstar finds himself on the bench.”
Guardiola will be under pressure to transfer domestic success to the European stage this season which is his third in charge of the German giants.
Bayern are 1.10 to retain their league crown this season and become the first side to win the Bundesliga for four successive seasons.
