Memphis Depay has backed himself to succeed at Manchester United and says he relishes the pressure of wearing the iconic number seven jersey at Old Trafford.

Depay put his hand up to wear the jersey when Angel Di Maria left for Paris Saint Germain and will follow in the footsteps of famous names like Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham and Eric Cantona in the famous shirt.

Having worn seven for PSV Eindhoven, Depay says it feels lucky and he was not put off following some of the United greats.

“I appreciate the history, but I want to be my own man. It’s an honour to wear the number seven and I will wear it with pride,” he said.

“Last year I played with seven on my back and I scored a lot of goals so I am confident with that number.”

Depay made his competitive debut at Old Trafford in the 1-0 win over Tottenham on Saturday.

Although he was unable to score, he played his part in the lead up to Kyle Walker’s own goal and there were glimpses of the trickery and pace that convinced Louis van Gaal to part with £29m for his services.

Depay says he wants to play an exciting brand of football but is also aware of his role within the team.

“I want to bring creative things, goals. I have to play with discipline in midfield,” he added.

“I can’t lose the ball too much, but I can make risks on the sides and when I come into the third phase, then I can make my tricks and take risks.”

Depay is 34.00 to be the Premier League’s top scorer this season while Manchester United are 1.62 to win their next game which is away at Aston Villa on Friday night.
