Tottenham are closing in on the signing of Steaua Bucharest defender Vlad Chiriches, according to Romanian club’s coach Laurentiu Reghecampf.
Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas has been on the lookout for a new central defender after Steven Caulker left for Cardiff, while William Gallas has also departed White Hart Lane.
The Portuguese tactician now looks to have finally landed his man though after reports claimed a fee in the region of £8.5million had been agreed between the two clubs.
Reghecampf is hoping that the Romanian international will be able to play in the second leg of Steaua’s Champions League play-off against Legia Warsaw on Tuesday, before then linking up with Spurs.
“The two clubs have agreed to transfer him. I’m very happy for him,” Reghecampf told reporters.
“I cannot say the amount for which (he was) transferred, but it is very high.
“It will be the most expensive transfer in the history of Steaua.
“The owner says that all there is left to do is sign some documents.
“We hope he will help us Tuesday night if he can.”
The news will come as a big boost to Villas-Boas, who has just missed out on the signing of Brazilian star Willian after he opted to sign for Chelsea.
