Toby Alderweireld says Tottenham must learn from the mistakes they made in their opening Champions League defeat when they face CSKA Moscow on Tuesday.

The Lilywhites lost 2-1 to Monaco in the first round of fixtures, conceding two sloppy goals in the process and were criticised for their naivety against a team who demonstrated the quality and organisation required at the highest level.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men will now be looking to get back on track on Tuesday when they take on CSKA in the Russian capital.

Another defeat could spell disaster for Spurs, with only 10 teams, including Arsenal last season, ever making it through to the knockout rounds of the Champions League after losing their opening two fixtures.

Despite the quality in Tottenham’s squad, Alderweireld is one of only a few to have previous Champions League experience and he believes the defeat to Monaco will have shown his younger team-mates just how tough it can be playing in Europe’s biggest club competition.

The Belgian says they must now demonstrate that they have benefited from their opening defeat and prove that they can cut it at the highest level against Leonid Slutsky’s men.

“It’s about learning from your mistakes,” Alderweireld told the Evening Standard. “We’ve got quite a young squad, so sometimes it does not go the way we want.

We need to bounce back and come back better and our ambition is to do that. “It’s a difficult one but we have to get a good result in Moscow to get into the next round.

Sometimes it happens. Now we need to be ready and get a good result.” Tottenham are 2.30 to win in the Russian capital, with the draw 3.20 and CSKA priced at 3.10.
