Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is pessimistic on Toby Alderweireld’s chances of featuring against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League on Tuesday after the defender sustained a leg injury during Saturday’s 1-1 draw at West Brom.
The Belgian international has been an ever present for Spurs in the Premier League so far this season, but he was forced off during the second half of the draw at The Hawthorns, after falling awkwardly.
The 27-year-old has also played in the club’s two Champions League matches this season, but Pochettino has confirmed that he is unlikely to travel with the squad for Tuesday’s game at the BayArena.
“With Toby we need to wait 24 to 48 hours,” Pochettino said. “He got a heavy knock to his leg. We will see what happens, now it is very painful. We need to know the problem.
It is very difficult for him to go [to Leverkusen]. “But we need to assess with a scan or whatever the doctors want to do. We need to be clear what happened in his leg.
I don’t know exactly what happened, it was hard for me to see from the bench.” The North Londoners are currently second in Group E after bouncing back from an opening day defeat to Monaco with an away success against CSKA Moscow last time out.
Pochettino’s men are available at 3.40 to make it back-to-back wins in the competition on Tuesday night, while Leverkusen are priced at 2.15 and the draw is on offer at 3.25.
