Borussia Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel believes Friday’s 3-1 win over Freiburg came at the perfect time for his side.

Der BVB, who are 17.00 to win the Champions League, started poorly but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s goal on his 100th appearance for the club before half-time saw them go in 1-0 at the break.

Lukasz Piszczek doubled the lead after the interval and although Maximilian Philipp got one back, Raphael Guerreiro concluded the scoring in second half stoppage time.

The result helped Dortmund maintain their strong start to the season and equal a club record of 24 home games without defeat.

With them also hitting the woodwork twice, the result will have given Tuchel’s side extra confidence ahead of Tuesday’s visit of Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Having beaten Real on the last three occasions they have met in Germany, Dortmund are 2.40 to win the game, with the draw 3.50 and Los Blancos priced at 2.70.

Tuchel admits he was worried by some aspects of his side’s performance on Friday but was pleased with the way in which they responded once they found their rhythm.

Despite a few nervous moments, the coach was full of praise for his players and feels their display has set them up nicely going forward.

“After a weak opening 15 minutes, we played an outstanding first half where we should have led by more goals,” Tuchel said.

“It then became tight and we were nervous. But it’s great to have pulled it off, especially after three big wins in a row.

“This performance comes at just the right time.”
