John O’Shea has revealed his delight after long-serving midfielder Lee Cattermole put pen-to-paper on a new six-year deal with Sunderland.

Cattermole was entering the final year of his current deal in the north east but committed his long-term future to the club prior to their North American pre-season tour.

The influential midfielder calmed any fears than he may run down his deal and depart for a new challenge.

The former Middlesbrough and Wigan man is set to begin his seventh campaign at the Stadium of Light and is just three appearances shy of 150 in all competitions.

Dick Advocaat, who himself committed his future to the club over the summer, has been busy in the transfer market by adding Adam Matthews, Younes Kaboul, Jeremain Lens and Sebastian Coates to the squad.

O’Shea believes that the deal for Cattermole could be just as valuable for the future of the Black Cats, who can be backed at 2.88 to get relegated, as they look to avoid a repeat of last season.

The Republic of Ireland international praised the attitude of the 27-year-old and feels that he can help to steer the club in the right direction.

O’Shea said: “It is fantastic news for the club and it is an exciting five years to look forward to.

“You’re always a little worried when a player enters his final year because decisions can be made and clubs can come in, but Lee has committed to Sunderland and it is great news for everyone.

“Since I’ve been at the club he’s been fantastic for me, you’re always learning from him because of the type of character he is and how he adapts himself around the training ground to keep an eye on everything.”
