Manchester United are starting to build some momentum and will be battling out to retain the Premier League title, a confident Chris Smalling has predicted.

David Moyes’ early-season detractors have been silenced in recent weeks as Sir Alex Ferguson’s managerial replacement at Old Trafford appears to have helped the players find some consistency following a difficult start to his tenure in which the side slipped to three defeats in their opening eight games.

And after Sunday’s 1-0 win against current league leaders Arsenal at Old Trafford, which moved United up to fifth position in the table and just five points off the summit, Smalling issued a confident claim about their title aspirations.

The England international defender told the United official website: “We are starting to show a bit more form and consistency.

“That’s positive given how we started the season.

“It’s starting to come together now and come January and the new year, we’ll be really flying and showing that consistency United have become known for over many years.”

United return to Premier League duty at Cardiff City on November 24 before concluding the month with a trip to Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League.
