West Ham coach Slaven Bilic was quick to criticise his team’s defending after their 4-2 defeat at home to Watford.

The Hammers looked to have the three points wrapped up during the early stages of the first half.

Two goals from the in-form Michail Antonio had put West Ham in total control but they then conceded two before half-time.

Strikers Odion Ighalo and Troy Deeney scored to give the Hornets every chance in the second period.

West Ham failed to regroup and further strikes from Hornets duo Etienne Capoue and Jose Holebas ensured Watford won their first game of the campaign.

Saturday’s defeat leaves Bilic’s side 17th in the league table and that could be made worse if Sunderland win on Monday night.

Speaking after the match, the Croatian admitted his side were not good enough in defence at the London Stadium. “We are disappointed and angry,” he said.

“It started so well for us. For 40 minutes in the first half we were on top of the game, pressing, getting second balls, chances, hurting them behind their defence through the pace of Antonio.

“It was great, we scored two goals and created more chances – they also had chances in the beginning – but after we scored the second goal it was all us.

They did not put us under any pressure and then the last five minutes of the first half changed the game a lot.

“In the second half we just continued to defend badly.

We gave them too much space in too many dangerous areas and it looked too easy for them from where I was standing.”
