Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon insists his team thought they had done enough to win after they lost the Champions League final to Real Madrid.
The Italian giants were the outsiders going into the Saturday showdown in Cardiff and they eventually lost 4-1.
A brace from Cristiano Ronaldo and goals from Casemiro and Marco Asensio did the damage as Juventus failed to build on their Serie A title win.
Saturday’s defeat was Buffon’s third in the Champions League final and he may never get his hands on the trophy at the age of 39.
Speaking after Saturday’s final, Buffon told reporters: “It’s a big disappointment because we thought we did everything we needed to win.
“We had a great first half in which we had Real in trouble. It leaves you with an open mouth, the episodes that never went our way. I cannot explain why we played like we did in the second half.
“To win this cup you have to be stronger than everything against you. In the second half their class, their strength, their ability to win these challenges was seen and they deservedly won.”
Despite Buffon’s lack of success in the Champions League he has won multiple titles so far.
He has won the Scudetta eight times with Juventus while also tasting success in the Italian Cup and winning the UEFA Cup with Parma in 1999.
He won the World Cup in 2006 with Italy and will be hoping his team can do so against next year in Russia.
