Sergio Ramos has brought an end to a summer of speculation about his future by penning a new five-year contract at Real Madrid.

The 29-year-old Spain international has been linked with a transfer to Manchester United for the last three months with Louis van Gaal reportedly ready to spend £28.6million to land the defender.

United had hoped to bring Ramos to Old Trafford in a part-exchange deal which would have seen goalkeeper David de Gea move to Rafael Benitez’s side.

Ramos moved to Real from Sevilla in 2006 and has won three La Liga titles, the Champions League and UEFA Super Cup during his time in the Spanish capital, as well as collecting two Copa del Rey titles.

He has made over 400 appearances in all competitions for the club as well as helping Spain win the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and two European Championship titles.

De Gea continues to be linked with a big-money move to Real Madrid and Van Gaal has not selected him to play in either of United’s first two games of the campaign – the 1-0 wins against Tottenham and Aston Villa.

The United boss has said the goalkeeper lacks “focus” because of the continued speculation about a return to Spain.

Real Madrid open their La Liga campaign against Sporting Gijon at Estadio Municipal El Molinon on Sunday and are 1.22 to win the encounter. The draw is available at 6.00 and the home side can be backed at 12.00 to make a winning start to the season.
