Sergio Aguero insists Argentina team-mate Lionel Messi is still as hungry as ever to win trophies as the duo prepare for the Copa America.

Both forwards have enjoyed glittering trophy-laden careers, Messi with Barcelona and Aguero as part of a Manchester City side that successfully defended their Premier League title to claim an incredible domestic treble.

However, neither player has enjoyed any success with their national team as Messi has finished on the losing team in the 2007, 2015 and 2016 Copa America finals. The duo were also part of La Albiceleste’s 2014 World Cup team that lost 1-0 to Germany in the final.

Questions have been asked about the Barca man’s commitment to the Argentinian cause as he has retired once before and taken eight months off before returning to the squad. However, Aguero insists that his compatriot is a vital member of the team and someone who cares very much about playing for the white and blue.

“We all know the desire that Leo has when he comes here,” he said. “The happiness he transmits is fundamental for us because we know very well how much he loves the national team.”

Argentina will play Colombia, Paraguay and Qatar in Group B in this year’s Brazilian showpiece and can be backed at 4.50 to win the tournament.

They face Colombia first on June 15 and are on offer at 2.15 to win, with the opposition priced at 3.60 and the draw 3.30. Brazil are 2.20 favourites to lift the trophy.
