New England boss Sam Allardyce says captain Wayne Rooney still has a big part to play for his country going forward.

The former Sunderland manager was officially unveiled as the new Three Lions boss on Monday, after he was appointed last week by the Football Association.

He has indicated that Rooney may not stay as captain under his tenure but the Manchester United star is still expected to have a huge role within the squad.

Rooney played in midfielder under former Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal last year and ex-England coach Roy Hodgson then played him in a similar role at the European Championships in France.

He endured a frustrating tournament and was unable to stop his side losing to Iceland in the last-16 of Euro 2016.

With Allardyce now at the helm, reports suggested Rooney could lose his place but the 61-year-old insists he has a future with England but his role will depend on where Jose Mourinho plays him this season.

He told reporters: “I still think Wayne Rooney still has a massive place to play in the England side.

I don’t think there is any doubt about that.” “I think Jose will determine [where he plays for England].

“If Jose says he is not going to play him in centre midfield and he is playing up front and scoring goals for Manchester United, then it would be pointless me bringing him into England and playing him in centre midfield.”

Allardyce will now turn his attention to the 2018 World Cup in Russia and England can be backed at odds of 19.00 to win the tournament in two years time.
