Wayne Rooney says Manchester United “can surprise a few people” in the second half of the Premier League season following their hard-fought victory at Hull City on Boxing Day.
United found themselves 2-0 down early on at the KC Stadium but fought back to win 3-2 – a victory which moved them on to 31 points, eight behind leaders Arsenal.
Rooney continued his fine season with a superbly-taken volley to make it 2-2 and afterwards the England striker said the win was a good riposte to some of their critics.
He told Sky Sports: “I think we had some poor results at the start of the season but we are starting to show some real quality.
“In the last few weeks we are having a go. We are working hard, we are fighting for each other and we are ready for the challenge.
“Hopefully, we can surprise a few people.”
Boss David Moyes has had his fair share of detractors this season but, following wins at Aston Villa and West Ham and a Capital One Cup success at Stoke City, things are looking brighter at Old Trafford.
The Scot paid tribute to Rooney’s performance and his stunning goal that helped his side to the important win on Boxing Day.
“Wayne played great because he had to do two or three different jobs to do,” he said.
“They tell me that’s his 150th Premier League goal today and to score one like that, a nice volley, was really well taken.”
