Wayne Rooney has been singing the praises of his Manchester United and England teammate Marcus Rashford.

The teenager has earned a senior recall from Gareth Southgate after being left out of Sam Allardyce’s only Three Lions squad last month.

Rashford has also pushed his way up the pecking order under Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford and has scored three goals in five Premier League appearances this term.

He impressed Southgate when he scored a hat-trick for England’s Under-21s against Norway last month and Rooney feels he deserves to be in the senior set-up for the games against Malta and Slovenia in the coming days.

“It’s important with exciting young players that they get the rewards they deserve and I think he deserves it,” Rooney said.

“He’s been fantastic since he got into the Manchester United squad and he’s carried that on again this season so he fully deserves his chance to be in the squad and to play and I’m sure if he does that he will take his opportunity.”

Rooney meanwhile has found himself looking on from the sidelines at Man United, with Jose Mourinho leaving the skipper out of his last three starting line-ups.

The 30-year-old has little doubt that Rashford is going all the way to the top if he continues to work hard.

“He is probably one of the most exciting players in world football, young players, at the minute,” he added. “I am sure if he keeps working hard and developing he’ll be a superstar in years to come.”

England are 1.18 to win qualifying Group F for the 2018 World Cup, with Scotland priced at 9.00 and Slovakia 11.00.
