French international Antoine Griezmann says he has much more to improve on before he can be talked about alongside Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The forward is a contender for this year’s Ballon d’Or award having already finished second to Ronaldo in the UEFA Best Player in Europe award.
Messi and Ronaldo have accounted for the previous eight Ballon d’Or awards between them but Griezmann makes no secret of the fact he wishes to get to their level.
He scored six Euro 2016 goals as France reached the final on home soil and fired 32 goals for Atletico Madrid as they finished third in La Liga last season.
He is not yet at the level of Messi and Ronaldo, he admits. “I think I still have more to do to be their equal, starting with winning titles,” he told L’Equipe.
“They’ve won them and they keep winning them. “But as I’ve said in the past, I want to sit at their table.
And I think I’m getting there, bit by bit. I hope to stay there as long as possible.”
Griezmann has netted six times already in Spain this season as Diego Simeone’s Atletico set the early pace in the title race, on goal difference from city rivals Real Madrid.
This week, the 25-year-old is focused on international duty with Les Bleus as they face Bulgaria at home and the Netherlands away.
France are 1.67 to win qualifying Group A outright while the Dutch are 2.50.
