Lucky Roma punished a wasteful Frosinone to record a comprehensive victory away from home.
Danielle de Rossi’s men rode their luck and ran riot with a Dean Huijsen solo in the first half. They then sealed the win with a rebound from Sardar Azmoun and Leandro Paredes’s penalty.
This game also witnessed the return of Chris Smalling since September 17 days out of action, as the Giallorossi rested Paulo Dybala after Thursday’s 1-1 Europa League playoff draw away to Feyenoord.
After Romelu Lukaku tested Stefano Turati at the near post, Matias Soule missed two big chances in just over two minutes. He first pretended to curl towards the far top corner only to take a low snooker shot that skimmed the near post. His strike from outside the box was acrobatically palmed around the far upright by Svilar.
The hosts were presented with another chance as Reinier failed to make the most of a header at the back stick on Marco Bresciani’s cross.
Frosinone failed to score a triple opportunity on the half-hour mark as a pull-back from the by-line found Kaio Jorge from seven yards. Svilar parried the first attempt, the second charged down, and the third drilled inches wide.
Roma eventually made them regret so many wasted opportunities, as they took the lead with a solo stunner from Huijsen. The center-back dribbled from his half through the center, cut inside a defender, and curled a fantastic right-foot finish into the far top corner.
He was booked for a provocative celebration, putting a finger to his lips and silencing the crowd after he celebrated at first in the Cristiano Ronaldo style.
Huijsen was a Frosinone player in January until Roma called Juventus for a loan, and he demanded this move instead.
Due to the yellow card, there was tension in the arena, which made De Rossi substitute Huijsen and a tired Romelu Lukaku, moving Sardar Azmoun into a more advanced role.
This eventually paid off as the Iranian got the second goal. Bryan Cristante’s rocket bounced right in front of Stefano Turati, who made a tricky save, and Azmoun was quickest to react on the rebound.
Roma were also penalised after Caleb Okoli charged down a Baldanzi strike with his arm. A penalty was awarded following the V.A.R. on-field review, which Leandro Paredes converted by sending Turati the wrong way.
