Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery reckons that his contribution to Bundesliga side’s outstanding treble will help secure the UEFA Best Player in Europe Award.
The Frenchman was a key figure in last season’s League, Cup and Champions League treble that saw him collect medals at the expense of the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, his big rivals for the accolade.
Those three make up the shortlist for the honour that will be bestowed during tonight’s Champions League Group phase draw in Monaco.
Ribery said: “I certainly have a good chance because the last season went perfectly.
“I have consistently shown very good performances and I have done everything to win this award.
“I’m excited but also relaxed about my chances.”
Despite missing out on the Champions League, Lionel Messi helped Barcelona to another La Liga title with 46 league goals, while Ronaldo was leading scorer in the Champions League with 12 goals. Both will be expected to amass the lion’s share of the votes this evening.
Ribery’s team-mate Arjen Robben could argue that he should be strongly considered, while Robert Lewandoski scored the four goals that famously destroyed Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final.
Andres Iniesta picked up the coveted award 12 months ago.
