Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has backed defender Harry Maguire to be success at Old Trafford as he is “made” for the club.

Maguire became the world’s most expensive defender when swapping Leicester City for the Theatre of Dreams and put in an excellent performance as the Red Devils beat Chelsea 4-0 in their season opener. The 26-year-old has also been capped 20 times by England and was one of the standout players at the 2018 World Cup when the Three Lions made it to the semi-finals in Russia.

Schmeichel has watched the former Hull City man’s career develop at the King Power Stadium where his son Kasper has been the regular Foxes keeper since 2011, and United’s 1999 treble winner admits he always looked destined for a move to the north west.

“I have to say when I saw Harry the first time for Leicester when he played his first game he intrigued me straight away,” he told the Mirror. “A couple of games in I am thinking, ‘This guy is made for Manchester United ‘. He is not fazed about anything.”

Maguire may not be the most aesthetically pleasing player to watch but the Denmark legend feels he has what it takes to become a vital player both for club and country. “For some people he looks a bit awkward but I have got used to him and know exactly what he will do and think he will do very well,” he added.

“He is going to bring stability in defence. He is a very calm, cool customer. There is nothing erratic about him.” The Sheffield-born stopper’s next test comes against Wolves on Monday when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer takes his men to Molineux.

United are priced at 2.30 to take all three points with Nuno Espirito Santo’s men on offer at 3.30.
