Brendan Rodgers is putting plenty of stock in Leicester City making progress in England’s domestic cup competitions this season.

The Foxes travel to Newcastle on Wednesday evening for their Carabao Cup second round clash, with Rodgers vowing to field a strong team in a competition they have won on three previous occasions. Youri Tielemans, James Maddison and striker Jamie Vardy could all be rested but Rodgers wants to progress.

“We want to do well in the cup competitions,” the Northern Irishman said. “We’ve spoken about that as a group so we’ll go there with a strong team, a strong squad, and it’ll be tough, but we look forward to it.” Leicester were winners away at Sheffield United on Saturday, ensuring they have five points from three Premier League games so far.

Newcastle meanwhile caused the upset of the weekend on Sunday when they stunned Tottenham with a 1-0 win in north London. Despite that shot in the arm for Steve Bruce and his Magpies side, Rodgers insists Leicester must approach the fixture with confidence.

“Of course, everyone wants a home draw in the cup games, but however it comes, Saturday was an important result for us, against a team with a great spirit,” he continued. “For us to take that victory and performance into this game will give us confidence, but we’ll have to earn the right to hopefully get into the next round.”

Leicester are 2.00 favourites to win at Newcastle, with the home side 3.60 and the draw priced at 3.40.
