Stoke assistant manager Mark Bowen has revealed the club are interested in signing Manchester United defender Phil Jones.

A string of injuries has seen the England international slip down the pecking order at Old Trafford in recent times, with an ankle problem meaning he has not played a competitive club match since January.

New Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho has a wealth of defensive talent at his disposal, with the likes of Eric Bailly, Daley Blind and Chris Smalling seemingly vying for a starting berth, meaning Jones could be allowed to leave the club in search of regular first-team football.

One club interested in signing the 24-year-old is Stoke, with Potters assistant manager Bowen confirming they have made enquiries about the versatile defender.

“I remember Sam Allardyce talking about him when he broke through and said he was the new Duncan Edwards,” Bowen said in the Stoke Sentinel.

“He did well as a youngster, got the big move, but it hasn’t worked out for him there. I don’t know how close we are or how far down the line it’s gone.”

Bowen believes Stoke could be the best place for Jones to rediscover his best form, as Mark Hughes’ men have previous experience in helping players return to the top of their game.

He added: “We have a bit of reputation for bringing players like that into this set-up and then thriving. Fingers crossed, something may happen.”

Stoke will be keen to have the versatile defender in their squad for their next Premier League match against Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday.

The Potters are available at 5.00 to secure a victory in the match while the Toffees are on offer at 1.75 and the draw is priced at 3.60.
