Pep Guardiola has reiterated the importance of Sergio Aguero to the Manchester City cause after his match-winning contribution against West Brom.

Aguero’s future at the Etihad Stadium has been the subject of speculation ever since Guardiola opted to bench the forward for the Champions League defeat in Barcelona earlier this month.

However the Argentine showed his brilliance with a first-half double at the Hawthorns and he set up Ilkay Gundogan for City’s third after the break as they ended a six-match spell without a win by overpowering the Baggies 4-0.

Guardiola enthused about Aguero afterwards, insisting the 28-year-old must be aware of his key role at the club. “Sergio is important for us.

We don’t have too many strikers. At the moment there’s Kelechi (Iheanacho) – and Sergio and Kelechi is a young player and has to learn a lot,” he said.

“I would like to convince Sergio how important he is for us. We need him a lot. He knows that, the team knows that. When he shows that brilliance and belief Sergio is exceptional.”

Guardiola insisted that he doesn’t have any doubts about Aguero’s ability to lead the line for Man City but he has once more made it clear that he wants to see the player working hard to improve all the time.

“We want to try and help him to be better and better, he is fantastic. Sergio made a really good performance, not just with the goals,” Guardiola added.

“The quality of Sergio made the difference in the first half. Hopefully he can keep going with that level.”

Man City are 2.20 to win the Premier League this season while fellow table-toppers Liverpool are 4.33 and Arsenal are 5.50 after their weekend wins kept pace at the top.
