Newcastle forward Ayoze Perez has revealed his delight after signing a new deal that will keep him at St James’ Park until the summer of 2021.

The 22-year-old has been an instant hit since arriving in the North East from Tenerife in the summer of 2014, scoring seven league goals in his debut campaign and following that up with a further five strikes so far this season.

The Magpies are currently in the bottom three in the Premier League table, but Perez insists he is delighted to remain at the club that gave him the opportunity to impress in England’s top flight.

Perez said: “A special day…a big day for me. I’m really happy here so it’s a good thing for me and I hope the same for the Geordie family. Newcastle gave me everything, made me a professional footballer etcetera – really happy here, really pleased to sign the new contract.”

The former Spanish under-21 international is confident his side can start pulling clear of the relegation zone over the coming weeks, particularly after the Magpies added to their squad considerably during the January transfer window.

He added: “Yes, it is getting better and better, going in the right direction. It isn’t going to take too long to start climbing in the league – so be patient and try to get results as soon as possible.”

Newcastle signed Henri Saivet, Jonjo Shelvey and Andros Townsend on permanent deals during January, as well as bringing in forward Seydou Doumbia on loan, and all four players could feature in the Magpies next match against Everton at Goodison Park on Wednesday.

Steve McClaren’s side are outsiders at 5.00 to win the match, whilst the Toffees are the 1.67 favourites and the draw is available at 4.00.
