Napoli have confirmed that striker Gonzalo Higuain has suffered an injury during the 0-0 draw with Inter Milan on Saturday but they will have to wait for news as to the full extent of the problem.

Higuain was forced to leave the game early at the San Siro as Rafael Benitez’s side look to hold on to the third Champions League spot in Serie A.

The former Real Madrid man needed oxygen as he was stretchered off and he looked to be in a great deal of pain.
The medical team of the Naples-based side confirmed following the game that he had suffered a painful impact injury to his ankle and that he will now be sent for further scans.

Benitez will be hoping that the results come back with positive news as he will be keen to start the striker in next week’s Coppa Italia final against Fiorentina who are priced at 2.33 to claim the silverware with Napoli favourites at 1.65.

A club statement read: “Strong blunt trauma to the right tibia. This the outcome of examinations submitted this morning on Gonzalo Higuain after the collision during Inter-Napoli with Andreolli.

“Clinical tests have confirmed what was first diagnosed yesterday.

“(Higuain) today did therapy and his condition will be evaluated in the coming days.”

Argentina boss Alejandro Sabella will also be keeping a close eye on Higuain, who is expected to be part of the squad for the summer’s World Cup in Brazil.
