Sunderland coach David Moyes insists his side’s 1-0 defeat to West Ham was harsh following Winston Reid’s controversial late goal.

The Black Cats, 1.40 to be relegated, have yet to win a game this season from their first nine matches.

Moyes’ men looked to have secured just their third point of the campaign but Reid struck in the 94th minute to give West Ham a huge three points at the London Stadium.

Saturday’s loss now means Sunderland are the first team for 111 years in top-flight history to not win any of their opening nine league games in consecutive seasons.

Despite the record, Moyes insists his side deserved more from the game and did enough to win, with Wahbi Khazri missing a brilliant chance to score.

He told Sky Sports: “It was offside. I told the referee, he said it wasn’t. It’s a tough job but it’s offside.

“It was very harsh. I was pleased with a lot of the things the players did, it was always going to be a tough game.

“They have some very good players and we struggled in the opening 20-30 minutes, but then we weathered it quite well and had one or two chances ourselves.

It was disappointing to lose the game. “It’s disappointing for the players because they worked so hard.

We had some big chances to score. We wanted to build some confidence but it’s difficult.”

Moyes will be hoping his side can overcome Southampton in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night, before they take on Arsenal in the league on Saturday afternoon.
