Manchester United boss David Moyes says Wayne Rooney is in “good shape” and expects striker to make a big impact during Sunday’s trip to Liverpool.

The England international has been constantly linked with a move away from Old Trafford this summer, with Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho regularly commenting that he believed the forward would be ideal for his side.

The Portuguese coach saw first hand just how good Rooney is as the 27-year-old returned to the starting line-up for the Red Devils on Monday, producing a brilliant performance as the sides played out a 0-0 draw in the first big game of the new Premier League season.

With the transfer window closing on September 2, it is now unlikely the striker will leave Old Trafford this summer and his display against the Blues means he looks set to retain his place in the side for the clash at Anfield.

This will be Moyes’ first taste of a Liverpool vs Man United clash since his summer move from Everton but in Rooney he has a man who knows better than most how hostile the reception can be for a former Toffee at Anfield.

The Scot believes his number 10 is now back to his best and is expecting a good display on Sunday.

“Wayne Rooney has been a great player for many years for Manchester United,” said Moyes.

“I felt he played very well the other night and he’s looking in good condition and is mentally in good shape, too.”
