Assistant Mark McGhee believes Gordon Strachan was provided with enough encouragement at Wembley on Friday to carry on as Scotland manager for the rest of the 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Scotland went up against England in what was the 113th meeting between the old rivals but the visitors could not pull off a first win over their opponents since 1999.

Headers from Daniel Sturridge, Adam Lallana and Gary Cahill helped England to a comfortable 3-0 victory that cemented their place at the top of Group F.

The Three Lions are now two points clear of Slovenia in second whilst the Scots have dropped to fifth place in the rankings after a third straight qualifying game without a win.

Strachan was already under pressure going into the clash at Wembley and many reports suggested another poor result would spell the end of his time at the helm.

However, the former Celtic and Middlesbrough boss has decided to stay on as things stand and McGhee has backed the decision of the number one to remain in charge. “I see no reason why Gordon can’t go forward into the next games,” he said.

“It was really important on Friday night that we showed people we were up for it and that we’re still capable of winning the next four games.

“We played well enough to say to people: ‘There’s more to come’.” Scotland will most likely need to win their remaining six qualifying games to stand any chance of clinching top spot although the positive is that four of those are on home soil.

Next up for the Scots is a clash against Slovenia at Hampden Park on March 26 before taking on England at the same venue on June 10.
