Reports are circulating that Manchester United have already begun their assault on the transfer market and agreed to sign promising Sporting Lisbon youngster William Carvalho this summer.
Although nothing has yet been confirmed, it is widely believed that David Moyes has wrapped up a deal for the 21-year-old after agreeing to match the £37million release clause in his Sporting contract.
It is in stark contrast to recent United forays into the transfer market, which have seen the club miss out on Barcelona’s Cesc Fabregas, Everton’s Leighton Baines and Athletic Bilbao’s Ander Herrera among others, and many see the signing as a real statement of intent from the Manchester club.
The Portuguese international, who has also been previously linked to Premier League leaders Chelsea, would appear to be unperturbed by United’s lack of Champions League football next season.
Despite their precarious league position, United can still make it to Europe’s elite competition next term because if they win the Champions League this season they would be allowed to defend the trophy.
However, that remains a big if as it is widely believed that United have little to chance of victory, currently priced at 30.00 to go all the way, especially considering that their quarter-final opponents are the defending champions Bayern Munich.
The Red Devils’ hierarchy will be hoping that Carvalho is the first of many new arrivals at Old Trafford, with players such as Luke Shaw and Toni Kroos also being muted as potential targets, as Moyes looks to bounce back next season.
