This is coming after Manchester United and Cameroon’s football federation (FECAFOOT) reached an agreement to see the player travel straight to West Africa from the Red Devils’ game against Tottenham in the Premier League on January 14th.
Cameroon will get their AFCON campaign started the next day, and should Onana make the national team lineup, he will be playing two competitive games in two days.
Andre Onana who hasn’t exactly had an incidence-free season with Manchester United, was keen to reduce the number of United games he would miss by playing at the AFCON.
However, if Cameroon gets knocked out from the group stage of the competition, then he may not miss any club matches. The agreement reached between United and the Cameroonian Football Federation (FECAFOOT) will see Onana available for United’s FA Cup third-round clash with Wigan on Monday, January 8th.
After a poor start to the season for Manchester United, especially in the UEFA Champions League, where the Red Devils finished bottom of their group and got dumped with the highest number of goals conceded, Onana contemplated opting out of the AFCON completely to focus on his club career.
When Manchester United signed Andre Onana from Inter Milan in the summer, after helping Inter reach the UEFA Champions League final, where they lost to Manchester City 1-0, Onana retired from the Cameroonian national team after a clash with Rigobert Song at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
However, FECAFOOT convinced the goalkeeper to return to national team football. Cameroon will face defending champions Senegal, Gambia, and Guinea in Group C of the competition.
The competition will kick off in Ivory Coast on January 13th, with the hosts facing Guinea Bissau.
