Manchester United midfielder Morgan Schniederlin believes it is important for the club to try and win every piece of silverware this term starting with the League Cup.

The Red Devils, who are priced at 4.50 to win the Capital One Cup, host Championship side Middlesbrough at Old Trafford on Wednesday as they bid for a place in the last eight.

Arsenal and Chelsea dropped out of the competition at the hands of Sheffield Wednesday and Stoke respectively on Tuesday, and Schneiderlin believes that puts them in a strong position.

The former Southampton man joined the Old Trafford side in the summer and is hopeful of claiming silverware in his first campaign with the League Cup providing a first opportunity.

Schneiderlin expects that Louis van Gaal will look to rotate the squad following Sunday’s goalless derby draw with Manchester City, although he feels they have strength in depth to cope.

The France international, who was restricted to the bench in the victory over Ipswich in the last round, played a key role in helping the club to fourth in the Premier League.

Schneiderlin admitted Boro will prove tough to beat but believes United can manoeuvre a tricky tie to progress.

The 25-year-old said: “The cup is something that allows every player to get an opportunity. I know the manager likes to change some players and it’s very important because we are a group and everyone plays a part and does their best. We want to win this cup.

Man United should try to win everything and that’s what we’re aiming to do. You saw when we played Ipswich that we were very serious about the competition and we want to carry that on against Middlesbrough, who are a good team. They were close to being back in the Premier League last season so it will be a hard game and we have prepared as seriously as possible.”
