Much of the talk for the Premier League title has been about Chelsea and Manchester City going toe-to-toe for the English crown and that suits Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard just fine.

The Reds secured a fine 3-0 victory over Southampton over the weekend and have crept up into second place in the table with four points between themselves and frontrunners Chelsea, who are 2.20 to take the title.

Many have doubted Liverpool’s chances of winning their first-ever Premier League crown this term – and their first top-flight title since 1990 – but, under manager Brendan Rodgers, the Merseysiders have emerged as serious challengers and can’t be overlooked at 5.50 in the betting.

Following that convincing win over the Saints, Gerrard was full of praise for his side and was more than happy that his team are being somewhat overlooked for the title.

“It does suit us at the moment being underdogs,” said Gerrard. “What suits us as well is that we’ve got a lot of time to prepare.

“We’ve worked on this formation all week. We chose to play a diamond and I think it shocked Southampton.

“We broke, played on the counter-attack superbly well and could have got more goals.”

A lack of European football this season has seemed to play in the Reds favour this season and, although they don’t want that to be the case for the long-term, it could well provide Rodgers’ men with the strong end to the campaign that will be required if they are to lift the trophy at Anfield on May 11.
