Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson is confident that his side can put Chelsea under severe pressure in their Capital One Cup semi-final first leg on Tuesday evening.

Henderson and co have failed to register a win in any of their last five meetings with the Premier League leaders, but the England man is ready to try and end that run in what is certain to be a crackling atmosphere at Anfield.

He told the Liverpool Echo: “I believe we can really put Chelsea under pressure. If we defend like we have been doing recently and we’re really solid, then we know we have the pace and the talent going forward to hurt them.”

The two sides have already met in the league this season, with Chelsea winning 2-1 on Merseyside, as goals from Gary Cahill and Diego Costa cancelled out an early opener from Emre Can.

The Reds have a fantastic pedigree in the League Cup, having won the competition on a record eight occasions, the last of which came in 2012, when they edged Cardiff City 3-2 in a penalty shootout, after the Wembley final ended 2-2 after extra-time.

Seven years earlier they had lost a thrilling final 3-2 to Chelsea, with Mateja Kezman eventually scoring what proved to be the winner in extra-time.

The two sides were captained by Steven Gerrard and John Terry on that occasion and are likely to be led by the same duo when they take to the field on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Reds can be backed at 8.50 to win the FA Cup this season, while they are 13.00 to triumph in the Europa League.
