Manager Brendan Rodgers feels he needs to win back the “trust” of the Liverpool fans when his side travel to Stoke on Sunday.

The Reds open their Premier League account at the Britannia Stadium – the same venue where they finished the previous campaign.

The Potters inflicted a humiliating 6-1 defeat on Rodgers’ men at the end of the 2014-15 season and the manager is desperate to avenge that loss on Sunday.

Rodgers accepts that his side disappointed last season and he is eager to oversee an improvement this term.

He told reporters: “I never take for granted the support I have had here. I also understand the disappointment of last year. I’m sure, after a game like Stoke, there was huge disappointment.

“Of course I have always been the one to take responsibility and rightly so. The anger goes towards the manager and I accept that.

“Yes, I need to regain their trust again. It has been an incredible journey since I came in here and it is an absolute privilege to manage this club and have the supporters behind us but, of course, you have to do well to earn that support and I know I need to earn that again.”

Liverpool are without Daniel Sturridge, Joe Allen and Jon Flanagan for the trip to Stoke but summer buys Christian Benteke, Nathaniel Clyne, Roberto Firmino and Joe Gomez are available.

The Reds are priced at 2.30 to take all three points on Sunday, while a win for Stoke is 3.40 and a draw is on offer at 3.40.
