Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has backed Danny Ings to be a success at Anfield.

The Reds confirmed the capture of the England Under-21 striker on Monday, subject to a medical, although they still have to reach a compensation deal with Burnley.

Ings, 22, grabbed 11 Premier League goals for the relegated Clarets last season – three more than Daniel Sturridge, Mario Balotelli, Fabio Borini and Rickie Lambert managed between them.

Carragher, who now works as a pundit, was impressed with Ings’ contribution for Burnley and hopes he can make a similar impact on Merseyside.

He told the club’s official website: “He did very well at Burnley.

“You could see his hold-up play and his work ethic, and when he got chances he finished more often than not. He had a very good season.

“He is someone Brendan Rodgers knows from the lower leagues from years before. It will be up to him when he gets chances to try to get goals that will cement him in the first team.”

Ings becomes Liverpool’s second signing since the season ended following the capture of James Milner, who also arrives as a free agent, from Manchester City.

Boss Rodgers is expected to oversee an overhaul of the squad this summer at Anfield after Liverpool missed out on a top-four finish.

Steven Gerrard has now joined MLS outfit LA Galaxy while contract rebel Raheem Sterling continues to be linked with Premier League rivals and also clubs in Europe.

Liverpool are 19.00 to win the Premier League next season.
