Lionel Messi’s debut for Inter Miami CF in the US couldn’t have been more extraordinary, as he sealed a thrilling victory with a majestic free-kick in the closing moments of the game against Cruz Azul. The match ended in a 2-1 win for Inter Miami CF during their Leagues Cup opener.

In his limited time with the team, Messi was brought off the bench, having participated in only three full training sessions. Despite being outplayed at times by the Mexican side in the match held at Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Miami managed to secure the win.

The Argentinian superstar, who recently won the World Cup and has claimed the Ballon d’Or title an impressive seven times, faced challenges and had only a few opportunities during the game. However, fortune favored him as he earned a foul just outside the penalty area.

Taking the opportunity into his own hands, Messi delivered a spectacular left-footed free-kick that gracefully curved past the defensive wall and goalkeeper Andres Gudino into the top left corner of the net.

“I knew it was the last chance,” Messi said about his goal according to ESPN.com. “I just tried like always do and fortunately the goalkeeper couldn’t get the ball.

“It is important for this team to get wins because we are not in a good position in the league. I know this is another tournament, but it will help our morale.”

Before the halftime whistle, Robert Taylor also contributed a goal, setting an excellent start for Inter Miami CF in their three-team group, which also includes Atlanta United. The competition features all 47 teams from MLS and Liga MX, promising more thrilling encounters in the future.
